Namdaemun, 1964. This is a striking image when compared with the high rise buildings that surround the South Gate now. It's Korea's number one national treasure, and it has undergone a facelift over the past few years. |

Memories! Memories!
ReplyDeleteLooks so much like the South Korea of 1965, when I first arrived there. Thanks for sharing the great pictures, Belford and Tim!!
Just another old soldier, Joe Jakresky
I was there from March 4 ,1964 until March 23 ,1965. We lived in Barracks # 1060. It is in the picture of that row of barracks. We were in Signal Long/Lines Group running the Comm Center there. It was a cold and lonely place. But made many lifelong friends there. Gene Hidalgo, Ray Slye, Billy Bob Moran, Robert Barnett, and our Sarge, Jerry B White from Alabama.....John Berard New Iberia, Louisiana

I was at ASCOM from January 1964 to January 1965. Viewing the photos kind of brought tears to my eyes as it seems like only yesterday when I was there at age 19. Memories from that time will never leave me as it has become part of who I am today. Thank you for bringing back the past which really is our future.
ReplyDeleteI was stationed there in 1976, It was then drawn down to only Camp Market. Mountains ,and valleys same , Ruins were rebuilt by ROK Army , Dual Smoke stacks remain main Land mark. Bupyoung- Dong thrived with activities supported by The Great American soldier. I was a 19 year old who got a dose of real life there. Two great americans killed there on my tour. Thank you
ReplyDeleteTe Barracks, the landscape, the views, is much different now then in 1963-1964, I really enjoy looking at these pictures. Thanks so much for the mrmories.
ReplyDeleteI was in Ascom City, 1960-61, with the 512th Ordnance Co. (GAS) General Automotive Support. I was company clerk, so I had it pretty good, and besides, I didn't know a generator from a clutch! ha,ha! Quonset huts look the same and the temples were beautiful. Lost my color pictures, so glad to see the one here.
ReplyDeleteI ARRIVED IN SOUTH KOREA AT KIMPO AIR BASE EARLY WINTER OF 1960, AND WAS THERE FOR 15 MONTHS WITHOUT ANY R@R. I WAS WITH THE 121 EVAC. HOSPITAL SERVING AS A CORPSMAN. WE ALL DID OUR TIME WITHOUT COMPLAINING, WHO WOULD LISTEN, RA OR DRAFTEE, WE WERE ALL IN THE SAME BOAT.
